Khalid

Adding to the memorable list of mononym performers, once Khalid Robinson truncated his name to simply Khalid, everything just took off from there. With his breakout album American Teen (which takes listeners on a journey through the average high school kid’s day), the nineteen-year-old Khalid erupted onto the scene. The silky-smooth megahit single “Location” has garnered over 26.5 million Spotify streams and 4 million YouTube views (and counting). Speaking to his Millennial contemporaries, the track brought to light the hardships facing young people in today’s world. Mirroring the tech-heavy milieu of modern life, the whole album is loaded with wistful production with whimsical synths. Having lived in Texas, Georgia and even Germany, Khalid has experienced a lot in his juvenile life, and this is vividly expressed in his music (which is often fun and bursting with youthful energy, but can be quite sophisticated as well). Along with artists Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Father John Misty, Frank Ocean, Grizzly Bear, Chance the Rapper, and James Blake, Khalid credits his mother as his biggest musical influence. An empathetic realist, Khalid quips that “it’s okay to be happy, it’s okay to be sad.”
